Now when you go in to buy colored contacts, you expect to pay something more than you would for regular lenses – because these are cosmetic items. You believe the manufacturers know that they can get away with asking for more. But really, should they cost more?

Actually, colored contact lenses run the gamut in the prices they go for. But basically, compared to regular contact lenses of similar description, colored ones cost about 75% more. Acuvue for instance sells colored contact lenses for $30 a box; the same company sells regular contacts at $20 a box. So why should you pay more to buy colored contacts? Is there anything that high-tech that goes into them that they should charge this much more?

Of course, manufacturers don't just pull those prices out of a hat. There are a few defensible reasons why they should charge more. To begin with, they do have to invest extra in the design of colored contacts. The lenses do have to look realistic, deep and beautiful. Artistry costs money.
